2017

Where Our Vision Took Flight

National Youth Bike Council began in January 2017, founded by a small group of passionate youth from Philadelphia and Seattle who wanted to unite young people as leaders in the cycling community. What started as a group chat soon grew into a network of youth leaders nationwide, driven by the belief that they could build the council they envisioned.

2019

Youth Only

At the 2019 Youth Bike Summit in New York, the Council members hosted a “youth-only” space, the first of its kind at the Summit. This space sparked a large discussion around the power of youth voice, connection across borders and future desires members had to expand youth leadership through bicycling.

2020

Bicycle Initiatives Expand

From 2 states to: 4 states and 5 cities, several local events organized by the Youth Council members, and to achieving legal nonprofit status. This milestone showcased the ambition and desire young people had for expanding leadership opportunities in bicycling. In 2020, the recruitment campaign started.

2021

One Project, Multiple Cities

The Council launched Spring Back On Bikes in 2021 during the height of the Bike Boom to help encourage youth to try simple DIYs on their bike to help them get back out and ride. In collaboration with many local bike shops and organizations, they also launched the Spring Back on Bikes Campaign and Summer Chats initiatives with similar goals.

2022

Efforts Expand Across Borders

The Youth Bike Summit organizers cancelled the 2020 and 2021 Summits. So following a few successful multi-city initiatives in 2021, the Council members traveled to 7 cities across the US to raise awareness about the organization. Later that year, they gathered once again at the 2022 Youth Bike Summit.

2023

The End Of The Youth Bike Summit

After the 2022 Youth Bike Summit in Atlanta, the organizers determined it was time to sunset the event. The idea did not sit right with the leaders of the National Youth Bike Council. In 2023 the Council took on the planning and development of future Youth Bike Summits.

2024

Youth Leadership Sky Rockets

The first ever youth-led and youth planned Youth Bike Summit happened between June 14-16, once again expanding the limits of youth leadership on bicycles. This year the Council members also launched a newsletter for bicycle programs helping youth with bicycles.

2025

Bicycling Empowers Youth

The Council marked it’s second year in a row of successful Youth Bike Summit planning and national community organizing, bringing together over 200 participants from 52 cities, 17 states, and 2 Countries. 2025 marked another year the Youth Bike Summit stayed a youth majority event.

Why Bicycles

By starting the conversation about bicycles at an early age, young people can reap the benefits of good health and mental wellness for a lifetime. We believe that access to a community provides the opportunity for peer collaboration, shared interests, and a strong sense of engagement. This is why engaging young people in bicycles is part of the bigger picture for a more collaborative, environmentally sustainable, and connected world.

Luly first joined the Council in 2019 after meeting the members at the Youth Bike summit while giving a presentation with NICA and have been hooked ever since! They are originally from State College Pennsylvania and are a member of the Philadelphia Bike Expo Team. While in high school they volunteered as a coach for Singletrack school for girls, an organization trying to get more middle school girls on bikes as well as working with the local high school to promote bike to school month, they race both varsity xc mountain biking, endurance gravel events and started a Queer affinity group in the state wide NICA league. Bikes have given them a place to push themselves and a way to give back to their community.

What is a Council
member?

Leadership starts with writing and
we write about bicycling

A national leadership and writing program for youth ages 13–24 that develops storytelling, public speaking, and civic engagement skills among student advocates through published works. As an organization we uplift youth voice so it’s important that youth know how to express their opinions and feel heard. Self development comes from reflecting within and that’s done through becoming a council member.

**This initiative creates community for youth, uses education to expand access to leadership opportunities, and encourages healthy habits through bicycling.
